Hello and thanks for your interest in PodRide. Since we started this Indiegogo campaign back in April we have learned a lot, and are still learning more each day.
One thing we learned is that it’s a complex business putting together all of the elements required to manufacture PodRide. Building the PodRide prototype by hand took many years of experimentation and a lot of work to produce.
It started with Mikael, but now we are a growing team. We are working full time to re-engineer PodRide to make it lighter, better, and easier to cost effectively mass produce. This involves the use of 3D CAD modelling software, working with manufacturers to understand what materials, and manufacturing processes they can provide, the tolerances they can work to, etc.
We also need to have components such as the frame undergo extensive testing for fatigue and safety compliance.
Besides working out the manufacturing side of things, we also have a lot to put together with regards matters such as customer support, warranty, shipping and logistics, compliance, and much more.
At this stage we believe we will have the 4 wheel version of PodRide for sale in late 2017. The 3 wheel version would likely be at minimum 6 months after the availability of the 4 wheel version. These estimates will be affected positively or negatively dependent on the amount of resources we can garner moving forward.
There are still many manufacturing decisions yet to be made, and we are reworking numerous components to simplify them. These decisions and actions can affect the cost of setup, production, etc.
We are also working on the selection of components such as gears, brakes, motors, etc. The components selected will have a significant effect on the final price of PodRide.
Because of these unknowns we are not in a position to even estimate what the price of PodRide will be at this stage. We are working on our “Bill of Materials” and once we have this we will be in a better position to provide some ballpark pricing figure for PodRide.
Since launching the campaign we have learned a lot about the legalities of a PodRide type vehicle.
Shown below is a high level overview of our understanding of ebike regulations for Europe and North America.
EUROPE: The 4 wheel 250W motorised version of PodRide will be legally classified as an ebike in European Union countries. (As a pedal assist configuration as defined in EN15194.)
USA/CANADA: We plan to offer the 4 wheel non motorized PodRide, and the 3 wheel motorized PodRide for customers in USA/Canada.
The classification of ebikes and other forms of transport is a complex matter in the US. There are federal rules and lots of different regulations at state and city level. A four wheel non motorized PodRide is classified as a bicycle in many jurisdictions. But adding a motor of any size or configuration would mean PodRide is no longer classified as a bicycle. To comply with these regulations we will produce a 3 wheel motorized PodRide for North America which be classified as a bicycle in most jurisdictions. The US allows up to a 750W motor, and Canada allows 500W. See more details regarding US/Canadian ebike regulations. You should review regulations in your country and local jurisdiction to ensure you can legally use PodRide where you live. The 3 wheel motorized PodRide for North America will come out some time after the 4 wheel PodRide has been released.
